First lesson done!

…and off we go! I had my first dance lesson on Friday 8/30. Well, it was a bit more of a meet and greet with my instructor / partner Alexis. We talked a bit about the Merengue event and what to expect, and then we went through some song options for our routine. My homework was to bring 3-5 song ideas to give us a starting place. I think I showed up with about 8 ideas, but a good number of them weren’t really “danceable” songs. However, we quickly landed on a good song and have an awesome idea for our dancing theme. Alexis is great, and she seems enthusiastic to put up with all my crazy ideas

After figuring out the song details, we had a little time left to try the actual dancing part. First off, I couldn’t believe how big the dance studio was – I guess I thought we’d be in some little room, but there was a huge space and other dancers there as well. Before Alexis started teaching me some dance moves, she asked if I had ever danced before. I quickly learned weddings don’t count I also didn’t have a great answer when she asked if I had any special skills… unfortunately I don’t think being good at math is going to translate too well into dancing.

Anyways, we have our dance type (e.g., merengue, salsa, cha cha) picked out so we started practicing some of the basic steps. Learning the first step was surprisingly easier than I expected, but then I found out it was the first of like 5 “basic steps” and I didn’t feel quite so cool anymore! We didn’t have long to practice this time, but I think it’s going to be a fun process and I’m very much looking forward to keeping everyone updated!

The next lesson is a “non-dancing” one where we are going to choreograph our full routine! More details to come soon. Thanks for reading!
